How to Choose the Right Tent Size for Your Event

When planning an event in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, finding the perfect tent isn't just about aesthetics, it’s about creating a comfortable, functional space where your guests can truly relax and celebrate. At Sperry Tents Seattle, we know that picking the right tent size can feel overwhelming. With so many options and details to consider, where do you even start?

Here’s a simple guide to help you choose the perfect tent size for your next event:

1. Start with Your Guest Count

The number of people attending your event is the single biggest factor in determining tent size. As a general rule:

  • Seated dinner with dance floor: Plan for about 18-20 square feet per guest.

  • Cocktail-style reception: Plan for about 12-14 square feet per guest.

  • Ceremony seating (rows of chairs): About 12-14 square feet per guest.

For example, if you're hosting a seated dinner for 180 guests you’ll want around 3400 sqft or our 46x86 Sperry Tent. To avoid the math… we have a quick diagram on what tent size fits best based on guest count and purpose of the tent. Also as always if you have any questions our team is more than happy to guide you towards the ideal tent size.

2. Think About Your Event Style

Are you picturing long farm tables? Rounds? Lounge seating with cozy nooks? The style and layout of your event affect the space you’ll need. Formal seated dinners typically require more space than a casual cocktail party.

Also, don’t forget "extras" like:

  • Dance floor

  • Band or DJ setup

  • Bar areas

  • Buffet and desert tables

  • Lounge furniture

  • Photo booths

Each of these elements will take up valuable square footage — and it’s better to have a little extra space than not enough. We have the Sperry Layout Planner which helps plan your perfect layout

3. Consider the Washington Weather

One of the best parts about Sperry Tents? Their beautiful, breathable sailcloth design which is perfect for Washington’s mild summers. But if rain is in the forecast (and let’s be honest, it often is), you may want additional covered space for a ceremony, cocktail hour, or entryway.

We always recommend a little extra coverage in case your guests need to move around without stepping into the elements. Our team can help you build cozy, weather-wise solutions like clear rollable tent sides or additional cocktail, lounge, and catering tents.

4. Factor in Your Venue

Some venues have space limitations that will affect your tent size. Before you fall in love with a certain tent, check:

  • Is there a flat, open area large enough for your ideal tent size?

  • Are there trees, landscaping features, or buildings to work around?

  • Does the venue allow stakes? While better for the grass than concrete blocks some venues do not allow them

Luckily, we are extremely versatile, and we offer multiple sizes to suit everything from intimate garden weddings to grand waterfront galas.

5. Trust the Experts

Our team at Sperry Tents Seattle has years of experience designing stunning tented events across Washington. When you work with us, we'll help you map out a customized layout based on your guest count, event flow, and dream vision. We’ll even do a site visit to make sure every detail is picture-perfect.
